Wyoming RV Travel Destinations
In our travels, we have been very fortunate to be able to visit many beautiful and interesting areas of the United States. Below is a list of national and state parks, museums, railroad excursions and other attractions in Wyoming we recommend visiting. Cities and towns listed with brackets [ ] were our base camps where we stayed and left our motorhome to visit the local attractions using our tow vehicle. We have also included, if applicable, our recommended RV parks and any restaurants we particularly liked in these areas. As RV parks, attractions and restaurants can change owners and/or management, we cannot guarantee the same level of food/service/accommodations as we experienced so please check current reviews and recommendations.
Check love-to-rv.com often as we will be adding other destinations as I research back into my journals from previous trips and as we continue to travel and find new and interesting places to go.
Cody, WY
> Beartooth Highway – The late CBS correspondent, Charles Kuralt, reportedly called the Beartooth Highway “the most beautiful drive in America”. We can certainly understand why as we enjoyed it so much, we have driven the highway twice to view the spectacular mountain views. It is not recommended that you drive the Bearthooth highway in your RV especially big rigs.
> Buffalo Bill Historical Center – The Buffalo Bill Historical Center comprises over 300,000 square feet with five museums – The Plains Indian Museum, Buffalo Bill Museum, Cody Firearms Museum, Whitney Gallery of Western Art and Draper Museum of Natural History. We suggest, if possible, to plan on two days to tour the museums to take the time to fully appreciate all that it offers. If you are in Cody in mid-June try to attend the annual Plains Indian Museum Powwow which takes place at the Robbie Powwow Garden adjacent to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. We have had the pleasure of attending this Powwow twice.
> Chief Joseph Highway – Drive The Chief Joseph Highway from Cody to the Beartooth Highway. Stop at the pull-off for a view and visits from the area chipmunks. They will come right up to you looking for a treat. These little guys have been fed well as they are some of the largest chipmunks I have seen.
> Buffalo Bill’s Irma Hotel – We had a wonderful buffet lunch at this beautiful old Hotel. They have a gunfight from Monday through Saturday at 6:00 p.m. We have not attended the gunfight but it sounds like fun especially for the kids.
Devils Tower National Monument – “Devils Tower rises 1267 feet above the Belle Fourche River. Once hidden, erosion has revealed Devils Tower. This 1347 acre park is covered with pine forests, woodlands, and grasslands. Deer, prairie dogs, and other wildlife are seen. Also known as Bears Lodge, it is a sacred site for many American Indians. President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed Devils Tower the first national monument in 1906.”
The Wyoming Dinosaur Center and Dig Sites Thermopolis, WY – The Wyoming Dinosaur Center and Dig Sites includes a museum, preparation lab, casting lab and dig sites. You can watch technicians preparing fossils found, visit a dig site and participate in the Dig For A Day program
Yellowstone National Park [Livingston, MT] – Yellowstone is my favorite national park so far in our travels. There is such a variety of things to see at Yellowstone including wildlife and geological wonders. To fully appreciate the park, you will probably want to spend more than one day as the park is very large. Be sure to see Old Faithful geyser.
√ Recommended Restaurants: Roosevelt Lodge Dining Room and the Old Faithful Inn Dining Room.
